Three Years of Statin Induced Neuropathy

Age: 65+  ·  Duration of use: 2–5 years  ·  Current status: No longer taking
Medication: Atorvastatin
Symptoms: Neuropathy

Three months after being prescribed 20 mg Atorvastain I developed sudden onset burning and numbness in my feet. After visiting many specialists and many diagnostic tests, not one doctor including a neurologist and the prescribing cardiologist suggested it could be caused by statins. I remained on the statins for three years as the neuropathy reached my knees. After doing my own medical research, I determined to stop the statins. Within a few weeks I could feel the neuropathy healing. It took about a year for the burning to subside and I am still left with a great deal of numbness that requires physical therapy to work on my balance.
