Life derailed by Wellbutrin

Age: 26–35  ·  Duration of use: Less than 1 month  ·  Current status: No longer taking
Symptoms: Akathisia, brain zaps, emotional blunting, sexual dysfunction, cognitive impairment, depersonalization/derealization, suicidal ideation, muscle/joint pain, GI disturbances

In January 2022 I was prescribed generic Wellbutrin (bupropion) for ADHD symptoms that I had dealt with my entire life. I was 26 at the time and was in a period of self improvement in my life. I was pursuing growth in my career, fitness, dating life, etc. I took Wellbutrin for my ADHD symptoms as this seemed like a logical step to reach my goals. Looking back this was an exciting time in my life up until the medication.

I only took 150mg XL Wellbutrin for 7 days total( 1 pill daily). I noticed side effects like dizziness and dry mouth within a few days of starting the med. This evolved into feeling euphoric like I was on LSD or something, colors were brighter, things were funnier. I thought the meds were working almost too well. On the 7th day of taking the medication I noticed I had developed almost complete loss of sexual function. I immediately stopped the medication after the 7th pill thinking these side effects would go away. They never did and even got worse. I developed DP/DR, emotional blunting, fatigue, GI issues, intrusive suicidal thoughts, akathisia, loss of ability to use my imagination, no internal monologue, and more.

The suicidal thoughts and akathisia subsided over time but I still face many of the other symptoms to this day over 4 years later. I struggle everyday to keep my life together and to not lose my career, and relationships. I have no idea if I will ever get my life back.
